"Engaging students in environmental restoration through service-learning partnerships is an effective tool for restoring native ecosystems while simultaneously rebuilding relationships between children and nature and inspiring future stewards of the land." ~Jennie R CramerNative Plants Journal-Volume 9, Number 3, Fall 2008
What is a wiki?
A collaborative website which you can add any RESEARCH by using a user name and access code. You may be able to only view video below at HOME.
Purpose:A collaborative research wiki conducted by L.E.G.G.O. student staff. To share and exchange information about non-native and invasive animals affecting our Florida ecosystems.
Groups will work on their particular assigned animals and determine if species is native, non-native, or invasive. Student staff will gather information found in texts, share websites, or contribute ideas to the project. The final product will consist of an informative Frames 4 animation about five different animal species found in Florida.
Meetings:When possible we will meet THURS in the science room from 7:30a.m. to 8:15 a.m. The science room is located in room 253 upstairs. The elevator is available to ADULTS only. A schedule will be posted. The assignments and contributions will be mainly done through this Wiki.
Dividends:If you have some time to spare, you are more than welcome to join us. If you are a dividend, please make sure dividend form is completed for all participants. Mrs. Dorr will let the you know when you can begin volunteering.
Contact:Mrs. Dorr - Layer Elementary:
4201 SR 419, Winter Springs, FL 32708
Direct: (407) 871-8063 Will try to call back as soon as possible when leaving a message.
Your 1st and most important mission: You will take most of the month of October to uncover all ofthe mysteries of your type of animal. We need to find out all hidden clues. Think about:
Can you tell if your species is a native or non-native species?
Where does your species come from? How did it get here?
Is your species invasive? What does that mean? How is it different than being just non-native?
How does your species affect our Florida ecosystems?
How did humans affect our Florida environment with your species?
What can humans do to fix the problem?
You will use this wiki to add any information or resources you find! The fun part is that you can add any information at home and in your jammies! Yes! you can work on your project anytime you can. This tool will allow you, any LEGGO staff member or even our administrators to add any comments
Safety First!:Make sure you NEVER use your full name. We can have fun. If you would like to make up a secret code name let us agents know. We will keep it a secret from every one else!
When your wiki page is full of information using your OWN words, then you will receive the "blue ticket"to transfer to you next mission!
Your 2nd challenge will be to create a clay animation or a digital story using a tool called FRAMES 4:
Look at this samples from other students:
Digital Story
Claymation or Clay animation
Week 1: We will discuss the seven step process
We will talk about how to impersonate a character. You can choose to have characters such as butterflies your plant attracts, the caterpillar on its host plant, or your researched plant.
Week 2: Scripting-Begin with script writing
–Write as if you were there, inside the story as it happens, experiencing your shock, surprise, amusement, etc, for the first time.
–Illustrations (photo/video/animation scenes using clay) are an outgrowth of the successful drafting of your narration. Don’t worry NOW, that step is coming!
You can add and edit your story with your group using this wiki.Make sure everyone has a character or a part in your story
Week 3:Chunking, Storyboarding and Organizing Folders
Chunking:
Edit! Edit! Edit! Delete unnecessary pieces of the story. Remember that pictures and music will tell more than words will. This time we will not be allowed to use FAMOUS artist music. In order for us to share our work we will use music provided by our Layer resources.
Organizing Folders in the laptops:
Remember to be as organized as possible. Make sure to use the folders listed in the picture shown below. You may use some of the pictures Mrs. Dorr made available through your Wiki pages. DON'T forget that in order to use them for your video we will have to save them onto the iBooks picture files.
Week 4 (towards beginning of December): Gathering: Voice Overs, Video clips and images
VOICE OVERS (recording your characters):
Once you have an idea of the order your story will go you may begin the voice overs. Follow these directions to open the directions.VOICE OVER .doc
Pictures:
When looking for pictures you ask Mrs. Dorr how to upload them on this wiki. Remember we will have to then save them onto the Picture Bank in the iBooks. There are some pictures available in your Wiki pages. Go look. You can add more to the collection.
Claymation supplies:Any scene materials from craft stores. Clay provided by Mrs. Dorr
Thank you to Mrs. Jan Johnson for sharing the clip below: Hopefully as humans we can learn the same kindness from these two species. We can make a better world.
"Humans are the main cause of species loss at this time, and people need to know the "how's" and "why's" of this issue and what they can do to make a difference"~Debra Corbett, Science Teacher at Assumption High School, Kentuky
Wow! I am excited to know we will be investigating animals or species in Florida. I love the projects you will begin now. Be sure to read carefully. Maybe, you should read the information a couple of times so you can "store" it in your brain. Then if you discover a fact that challenges your information, you can decide which statement is true.
I love how you are becoming "scientists" and investigating our natural world. Self-discovery and teaching others what you have learned is very powerful.
